Top Hospital Games For North Shore

Around 500 competitors from health boards across the country will meet in Takapuna in October to compete the hotly contested Top Hospital Games.
North Shore Hospital is hosting this year’s Top Town-style event for health professionals, which will bring together 50 teams, including the Taupo Trouts, Tongariro Ticklers, Hastings Sporty Bums and Krazy Kidney Klowns.

Jane Hunter, Executive Director of the North Shore Hospital Foundation, is organiser for the Games, which are being sponsored by North Shore City Council and Waitemata District Health Board.

“This is an annual national event of crazy variety games hotly competed by health professionals, doctors, nurses, laboratory, health support staff and ambulance officers from all around New Zealand,” she says.

The Games will be held at Taharoto Park in Takapuna and Ms Hunter says exact details are under wraps for now, but spectator interference will be encouraged.

“The types of challenges and games are under strict secrecy, but you can be sure the events will be spectacular. All the teams bring banners, mascots and tricks to distract the other teams, and there will be prizes for best team names, best banner, noisiest team, best supporter, and several other prizes.”

Ms Hunter has revealed that some of the game names include Slippery Eels, Wee Whizzers, Top ''n'' Tail, The Clappers, The Dizzy Noodle and Down The Drain.

Last year North Shore Hospital presented a new trophy - the Panfurly Shield – for best performance in a water game and so the challenge is on once more.
It is 20 years since North Shore last hosted the event and Ms Hunter is delighted this year it is being supported by the council.
“This is a chance for hard-working health professionals to get together and let their hair down. We really hope the public gets behind the Games to show the rest of New Zealand what a fun, vibrant place the North Shore is.”

Teams will meet on the shores of Lake Pupuke on October 22 and then parade to nearby Taharoto Park to begin full day of rivalry. North Shore Mayor Mr George Wood will officially open the Games at 9am.

Friends and supporters are also invited to a post-event party at the Bruce Mason Centre, Takapuna later that night.

“A spectacular welcome will be in store from Mika and the Toro Toro dance crew with Dance Ihaayami from the UK.”
