Commission condemns insurance
discrimination
People with experience of mental
illness should have the same opportunities and access to
services as other people, whether these are Government
services or services in the commercial sector, the Mental
Health Commission’s General Manager Mark Jacobs said
today.
“This is a serious issue which has a negative impact on the ability of people to have the same opportunities as the rest of the community.
“It’s important to remember that 20 per cent of the population experience mental illness – on average 65,000 people in any six months in this country access mental health services. This discriminatory practice has the potential to impact on all of those people’s access to insurance.
“The downstream consequence of this discrimination is an inability to get mortgages, loans for important purchases, credit, overseas travel insurance – things that we all take for granted as part of daily life, Mark Jacobs said.
