Temporary Road Closures and Traffic Delays
Temporary road closures and traffic delays are expected due to the passing of the Maori Queen Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu.
Waikato District Council have closed River Road from Queen Street to Kent Street to ordinary vehicular traffic from Wednesday, 16 August 2006 to Monday 21 August 2006.
Transit New Zealand expects considerable delays for State Highway 1 traffic travelling between Huntly and Hamilton until after the funeral, as large numbers of mourners travel to Turangawaewae Marae in Ngaruawahia. State Highway 1 between Huntly and Ngaruawahia and State Highway 1B between Taupiri and Lake Road will be closed to ordinary vehicular traffic on Monday for the funeral.
Detours will be in place during the closure:
- Traffic travelling south on SH1 will be diverted at Huntly off SH1 onto Tainui Bridge Road to travel on Riverview Road and Hakarimata Road.
- Traffic travelling north on SH1 will be diverted at Ngaruawahia onto Princess Street, Herschel Street, Waingaro Road, and over the Waipa Bridge to travel on Hakarimata Road and Riverview Road.
- Traffic travelling on State Highway 1B will be diverted to travel on Lake Road (Komakorau) and Horotiu Bridge Road to connect onto SH1.
Detours will be in place from 7.30am and the road will be closed at approximately 10am, dependant on traffic volumes. The road will reopen once traffic has cleared; this is anticipated to be around 4pm.
Marshals will man the sections of road closed, however access will be provided for funeral goers and emergency services. Both Council and Transit are requesting that travellers use alternative routes during this time and are warning of considerable delays.
A map showing detours is attached.
