Problem Gambling Foundation picks IPIC

PGF picks IPIC [18.08.06]

“The International Pokies Impact Conference (IPIC), hosted by Duty of Care in Melbourne next month, is an ideal opportunity for problem gambling agencies to learn from those closest to the problem,” says John Stansfield, CEO of the Problem Gambling Foundation of New Zealand (PGF).

Conference organizers, Duty of Care Inc., an organization that was created by people who had been hurt by pokies, have empowered former pokie users to share the truth about gambling.

“It is very exciting that Duty of Care is heading such a conference, with a combination of academics, experts and people affected by gambling. Problem gamblers and affected others are the ones we aim to help, so their truths should not be disregarded,” says Mr Stansfield.

“Such a conference is the ideal opportunity to form links with other agencies from around Australasia and the world, to unite and eliminate gambling harm,” says Mr Stansfield.

“Too often, we – as problem gambling treatment providers – focus more on the academic research and generalized anecdotes. Instead, we should be concentrating on the first-hand experiences from those affected by gambling.”

Mr Stansfield will be presenting at the IPIC conference, on how to put advocacy back into help services. Stansfield and PGF are proud to be part of such an important conference, and continually offer its support to Duty of Care.
