Targeting young people's lifestyles good move
The New Zealand Medical Association has welcomed the Prime Minister's launch today of initiatives to cut the obesity rate.
"Research shows that New Zealand children are among the most obese in the world, so it is critical that measures are taken to improve this situation," said NZMA Chairman Dr Ross Boswell.
"Good nutrition and exercise habits are set at a very young age. It is imperative that we should be targeting our young people to ensure they grow up healthy and active. "
The NZMA has long been concerned about the effects of obesity on the health of New Zealanders, and will be seeking opportunities to work with the Government to fight the obesity epidemic.
"Unchecked, obesity can lead to a number of serious health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers. Doctors recognise the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles, particularly to children who can be influenced by advertising and peer pressure into making unhealthy choices," said Dr Boswell.
"We support well-researched effective policies that can make a difference."
The NZMA contributed to the Health Select Committee's Inquiry into Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes, and is in the final stages of developing a comprehensive policy on obesity.
