Waitemata District Health Board selects internal candidate as new CEO

The Chair of Waitemata District Health Board (DHB), Ms Kay McKelvie, is pleased to announce the appointment of Dave Davies to the position of Chief Executive Officer. This follows an extensive national and international search for a candidate who would continue Waitemata’s strategic objective of ‘making a healthy’ difference to its population of 500,000 people.

Dave is currently the General Manager of Mental Health Services for the Waitemata DHB.

Ms McKelvie says that it was a unanimous decision of the Board.

“We had a significant number of well qualified and competent people apply for the position, but Dave’s experience and leadership style was considered the most suitable and advantageous to take the DHB forward in its endeavours to provide high quality, sustainable health services to its population.

“The organisation is working well, the Senior Management Team is a strong group and it was important that the person we chose would have the respect of and be able to work with that group. The team approach is one that the Board wants to continue and to encourage.

“We look forward to the contribution he will make across the spectrum of services offered by Waitemata both in the provider arm and through the PHO and NGO sectors,” she says.

Dave was born in Wales and came to New Zealand in the mid-80s, initially gaining psychiatric nursing employment before joining what was then the Auckland Area Health Board as a Regional Training Manager for Mental Health Services in 1990. Along the way he completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Sciences from Massey University, including a strong focus on Anthropology, which he has also built into his philosophy on psychiatry.

He has been in funding roles with the Regional Health Authority, the Transitional Health Authority, Health Funding Authority and with the Northern District Health Board Support Agency.

For Dave, applying for the position of CEO was one he thought long and hard about.

“I’ve really enjoyed working in Waitemata and am extremely proud to work within the organisation. I feel very privileged to be the new CEO,” he says.

Dave’s focus will be to continue with the existing work programmes and on further establishing strong, multi-disciplinary teams to work on shared objectives to deliver health services to the Waitemata district.

Dave will take up the position on November 27th.
