Nats Surprise Support For Health Unions Welcomed
“National Party’s Surprise Support For Health Unions Welcomed”
“The National Party’s surprise support for health unions is welcome,” said Mr Ian Powell, Executive Director of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists, today.
Mr Powell was responding to the media statement released today by National’s health spokesperson Tony Ryall that in the radiation therapists dispute that involves a series of strikes Health Minister Pete Hodgson should ‘start knocking some sense into his negotiators’ and to end their ‘ridiculous brinkmanship’.
“Given the antipathy of the former National Government in the 1990s to unions, including in the health sector, and its anti-union industrial legislation, perhaps the key is turning and a new dawn is about to emerge. Nearly all parts of the health workforce suffer from shortages and serious recruitment and retention challenges. Mr Ryall’s statement suggests his party might now recognise this.”
“This new dawn may be a united front of the National Party, health unions and flying pigs marching down the streets singing solidarity forever and we shall not be moved,” concluded Mr Powell.
