Girlfriend discovers crash scene in Wairarapa

Media Release: Sunday March 4 2007 0645

The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported a seriously injured man after a one car crash in the Wairarapa this morning.

The 23 year old Wairarapa man was the only occupant of the car which rolled and landed upside down in a paddock, trapping the man.

"Apparently the injured man's girlfriend was expecting to be picked up at work around midnight and became concerned when he never arrived" says Westpac Rescue Helicopter Crewman Dave Greenberg. "A friend drove the woman and they discovered the car upside down in the paddock around 3:30am and alerted 111".

The accident occurred on Te Maire Rd, west of Martinborough. The man was trapped under his car and was extricated by fireman from Featherston and Greytown brigades and was treated at the scene by Wairarapa Ambulance paramedics.

The man was flown to Wellington Hospital aboard the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and was treated by a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic.

He is suffering from suspected head and spinal injuries and is being treated in the Emergency Department.
