Last minute pay offer lifts hospital lockout
Last minute pay offer lifts hospital lockout
Last
minute negotiations between the Service and Food Workers
Union and District Health Board representatives have
resulted in the lifting of industrial action across the
nation's public hospitals.
The talks come as four contracting companies, Spotless, OCS, ISS and Compass prepared to lockout out 2000 of the 2800 workforce.
SFWU spokesperson Alastair Duncan says last minute talks have opened sufficient space for a return to mediation. However a range of outstanding issues still need to be resolved.
"The latest offer is an increase of 50 cents on the previous rate lifting the entry level rates to $13.60 with a top rate of $15.60.
"For the first time we also have the possibility of auditing the DHB's figures and this is an important development. Until now there has been far too much secrecy about what is, after all, public money.
"While this not a settlement it does change the options."
Among the issues to be resolved are whether the new pay rates will recognise current service and whether the DHB's will persist with their call for regional rates.
"It will be critical that the DHB's respond positively and that the contractors are willing to sign up to any deal."
"We now expect the lockouts by the contractors to be withdrawn so that further mediation can proceed as soon as possible."
Alastair Duncan says the lockout threat brought an angry response from many workers and messages of support from other unions and members of the public.
"What has taken place tonight is not a settlement, it is another step forward.
"We will continue to prepare for possible industrial action if needed at a future date. In the meantime we look forward to consulting with members on the best way to secure a full settlement."
