Kiwi Fitness Industry Honours Those Offering World-Class Health Solutions
New Zealanders making a difference to the health and fitness of fellow Kiwis will be honoured in Auckland this week. With more than 10% of the New Zealand population now seeing an exercise professional regularly, the annual Fitness Life Awards celebrate those at the frontline of the fight against obesity.
They will be joined this year by National Party leader John Key as guest of honour. "These awards celebrate the efforts of those working to help people from all walks of life lead healthy and active lives.
"Enabling people to take charge of their own health provides long-lasting benefits for themselves and their families. Making ourselves healthier makes our communities healthier," says Key.
At the 31 August event in Auckland, Key will be joined by Dame Susan Devoy, Suzy Clarkson and fitness experts from throughout the country.
Co-ordinated by Fitness Life magazine, and endorsed by industry bodies Fitness NZ and the Registrar of Exercise Professionals, the awards comprise seven categories with a total of 18 winners, including a special award for contributing to community well-being.
Fitness Life publisher Tania Greig started the annual event three years ago to celebrate excellence in the industry.
"We want to recognise the world-class standards of New Zealand's personal trainers, fitness and gym instructors and fitness centres.
"There are more than 1,500 exercise professionals now registered in New Zealand and they see more than 400,000 Kiwis on a regular basis.
"Medical professionals and government departments advocate regular exercise as vital to maintaining good health so it's no surprise that the number of people exercising - whether it's walking, fun-running or weight training - is on the rise," says Greig.
"It's a fast-moving industry - in more ways than one - and many techniques developed here have been exported very successfully overseas," she says.
The Fitness Life Awards will be presented at a black tie ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Auckland on Friday, 31 August.
