CDHB Social Workers Celebrate National Day

Canterbury District Health Board is marking National Social Workers Day tomorrow with a professional development morning that will be attended by about 100 of the region’s social workers.

The event at the Christchurch Netball Centre, which has been organised by CDHB’s social work leaders, will focus on Social Work and Cultural Practice with topics to include Improving Social Work in an Acute Hospital; Working with Refugees and Migrants; and Developing Cultural Competence.

CDHB’s Professional Advisor for Mental Health Social Workers Brenda Cromie said, “the public perception is that social workers are generally employed by social services and Child Youth and Family but there about 150 social workers employed by the CDHB. Social work is the largest allied health profession in New Zealand’s health sector.”

“Social workers are a vital part of clinical teams and are employed across CDHB services, helping patients and their families to use their strengths and resources to manage illness and access resources in the wider community,” CDHB’s Executive Director of Nursing Mary Gordon said.

“To become a social worker in the health sector requires a minimum of a three year degree and it is a truly satisfying career,” Brenda said.
