Ashburton Hospital Now Accredited Baby Friendly
Ashburton’s new mothers can rest assured they are
getting the best in breastfeeding support now that Ashburton
Hospital has achieved Baby Friendly Hospital accreditation.
Baby Friendly Hospital accreditation is a worldwide initiative to recognise health care facilities that have accomplished high standards in implementing the World Health Organisation’s Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. Baby Friendly hospitals actively protect, promote and support exclusive breastfeeding from birth.
“It’s a great achievement for us,” says Ashburton Hospital’s Director of Nursing and Clinical Services, Heather Gray. “In order to get the accreditation we had to undergo a very rigorous review of our policies, procedures and processes by the New Zealand Breastfeeding Authority. We were able to show that we can offer a very high standard of breastfeeding care and support.”
“The accreditation process was initiated by the previous Director of Nursing, Mary Ross, together with the Maternity Manager, Jo Brehaut, and it has required the full co-operation and energy of the whole maternity team.”
Canterbury District Health Board’s Christchurch Women’s Hospital, Lincoln Maternity Hospital, Rangiora Hospital and the Burwood Birthing Unit are also Baby Friendly accredited health care facilities.
