Kiwis crossed the finish line of the Movember whiskerathon today with $1,359,873 raised for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.
Prostate Cancer Foundation Director Barry Young says the amount raised so far exceeds all expectation.
“This is well over what we had hoped to achieve this year, and we’re still counting donations. We could not imagine a more successful fundraiser for PCFNZ”
Donations can be made online and by post. Funds are aimed at improving the outlook for prostate cancer sufferers; so far Movember funds have helped to:
- Create new support groups
- Enhance the PCFNZ telephone helpline
- Develop a series of DVD’s in 11 different languages for educating New Zealand communities and General Practitioners
- Establish a Urological scholarship grant for international training
- Fund prostate cancer research.
Movember Foundation Director Luke Slattery says that it’s important to measure the success of the month in two ways; in funds and in awareness.
“The moustache is our ribbon, during the month it’s worn by men as a symbol of men’s health Over 26,000 Kiwis have registered to participate, this means that Movember has been on everyone’s lips”
Tomorrow Kiwi blokes will shave the slate clean once more, but for tonight organisers say it’s time to celebrate and take that mo out in style.
Movember closes with the third and final official Gala Parte at Ellerslie Racing Club where judges will be looking to award seven category winners including the ultimate ‘Man of Movember’.
Tickets are $25, limited door and online sales www.movember.com
Movember 2007 is proudly grown by official major sponsors; Holden, L&P, Schick, The Rock and Tui.
