The New Zealand Nutrition Foundation's top 10 tips

for a healthy Easter

Easter is traditionally a time for family, friends and food, especially chocolate! As with many special occasions there is the temptation to over-indulge. While Easter doesn't need to be chocolate-free, Kelsey Woodcock, New Zealand Nutrition Foundation Nutritionist, suggests the following top 10 tips for enjoying this festive weekend without excess:

1. Indulge on one day: keep Easter eggs for Easter Sunday, kicking off with an energetic run around the garden to find them

2. Focus on taste: choose small or bite-sized eggs or chocolates and savour the taste

3. Choose wisely: marshmallow Easter eggs will often contain less calories than cream-filled ones

4. Fill up on other festive food: Easter's not all about chocolate. There are many delicious foods in season at the moment. Plums are at their best, and new season apples are sweet and delicious

5. Be creative: decorate hard boiled eggs, then enjoy them for lunch with a fresh, green salad and crusty bread

6. Try home cooked: make your own hot cross buns, the kids can decorate the tops and you all know what goes into each one

7. Think thin with spreads: whether you enjoy your hot cross buns warm and toasted or just as they come, don't drown their subtle spicy flavour. Scrape on a little spread rather than smothering with butter

8. Share: embrace the spirit of Easter and halve your Easter egg or hot cross bun with someone else

9. Be active: make the most of the never-ending summer sunshine and enjoy being active with friends and family

10. Enjoy local events: there's plenty happening out and about around the country over this Easter weekend - and much of it is free! Make the most of what's happening near you.
