NZRCGP Annual Conference

The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners holds its annual conference at the Millennium Hotel in Queenstown next week.

Keynote speaker for the .conference this year is American Professor Rich Roberts, President elect of the World Organisation of National Academies and Colleges of medicine (Wonca).

The official programme is available here: http://www.conference.co.nz/index.cfm/rnzcgp2008/Programme

The first function on Tuesday evening is the Annual Oration ceremony, where new Fellows are welcomed into the College, and Distinguished Fellows honoured. Fellows of the College, and the official party, will be in full academic dress.

There are two speakers, the first the Peter Anyon Memorial Address from Dunedin GP Tom Swire. Peter Anyon was a Hutt Valley GP paediatrician who helped set up one of the earlier GP training programmes in the country.
Dr Swire passed the College's Primex exam last year to achieve Membership.

The conference this year is hosted by the College's Otago Southland Faculty, with programme convenor Queenstown GP Dr Hans Raetz.

The local Faculty have invited Dunedin GP Dr Sue Walthert to give the 2008 Oration. It will be an intensely personal address, The Quest, through her encounter with Her-2 breast cancer and Herceptin.

Dr Roberts will speak at 9.30am Thursday morning. His address will be available shortly afterwards.
Should you wish to interview him, please contact me for a time.

CME. part of the life of every GP, featrues on both Thursday and Friday afternoons, and again on Saturday morning. There will be interesting sessions, including several discussing the role of the practice nurse in today's GP teams.

Possibly the highlight for rural GPs and general practice teams will be a special scenario that starts with a bus accident on the road to the Remarkables. The twists and turns of the Hans Raetz scenario will test every particpant. It would provide good images.

Full details are on the conference website.
