Conference08 – Medical Students celebrate careers in New Zealand

One hundred and thirty of New Zealand’s medical students will be in Wellington this weekend to attend a conference celebrating kiwi health, kiwi medicine and kiwi doctors. Conference08 – Made in New Zealand is organised by the New Zealand Medical Students’ Association (NZMSA) and exposes students to a diverse range of people, interests and opportunities available within New Zealand’s health sector.

“Ensuring our newest medical graduates see New Zealand as a viable place to work and train is especially important in the current health climate,” says Anna Dare, President of the New Zealand Medical Students’ Association.  “We hope this conference will foster a sense of pride amongst students about becoming a doctor ‘made in New Zealand’.”

It is also one of the few occasions in which tomorrow’s doctors are able to meet and exchange ideas on a national level. “We are delighted that this student run event provides such a unique opportunity for budding doctors to discuss the effect that training in New Zealand will have on their lives and careers," says Ms Rosemary Wyber, Convener of this year's Conference.

New Zealand has produced world leaders in a diversity of fields within health – from asthma research, surgical simulation technology, indigenous health, ethics and patient rights to doctors who combine medicine with scaling mountains. “Conference08 brings together some of the outstanding kiwis working in the medical and health sector to inspire the next generation of doctors,” Ms Wyber says.

The conference is focused around four themes:  Number 8 wire - Innovation, Research and Technology in New Zealand, Kiwis Can Fly - Global Health from a New Zealand Perspective, No Place Like Home - Health, Systems and Community in New Zealand and New Zealand Made - New Zealand Students, Doctors and Careers.  Keynote speakers include Professor Phillip Hill, Chair of International Health at the University of Otago, Dr Geoff Shaw, Intensive Care Clinician and winner of the New Zealand Health Innovators Award, and Dr Peter Foley, Chair of the New Zealand Medical Association. As well as medical professionals, the conference will be attended by politicians representing all of the major political parties as part of a panel debate on issues facing the health and medical sector in New Zealand, including ways to keep our newest medical graduates in New Zealand.
