Lions Roar for Wellington Children’s Hospital
The Vodafone Wellington Lions have chosen Wellington Children’s Hospital as its Official Charity for 2008. The announcement made on 16 July was welcomed by the Wellington Children’s Hospital official fundraiser, The Wellington Hospitals and Health Foundation.
“We are absolutely delighted that the Vodafone Wellington Lions have come on board” says Foundation Chair, Bill Day. “We have had the opportunity to meet some of the players at the Children’s Hospital in the past and the natural affinity they have with these sick kids is charming. It really makes the kids’ day.”
Part of the arrangement includes Lions
team members visiting sick kids in the Hospital and the
opportunity for the Foundation to hold a coin collection at
the Lions’ first home game on 1st August against Hawke’s
Bay.
Dr Graeme Lear, Clinical Director of Child Health
Services has already seen what a difference this
relationship can make “The children beam when players walk
onto the wards.”
The cause is one that touches the player’s hearts too. “Many of our players have children, and some of these kids have been in the hospital themselves. It is something we can really connect with as a team” commented Jamie Joseph, Vodafone Wellington Lions Coach.
