Innovative Health initiative is launched

One for the Girls:  Innovative Health initiative is launched in Auckland

OneForTheGirls is a health initiative supported by the Auckland District Health Board to talk with teenage girls about the benefits of receiving the HPV (human papillomavirus) immunisation.

Launching on September 1, the OneForTheGirls website (www.oneforthegirls.org.nz) will offer girls a forum to discuss and discover important information surrounding cervical cancer and the HPV vaccine in a youth friendly environment.

The HPV Vaccination Programme, which aims to reduce HPV infection and the number of women in New Zealand who subsequently develop cervical cancer, is now available nationally for free for girls aged 17-18 from their primary healthcare provider. It is estimated that 4 in 5 people are exposed to the HPV virus in their lifetime.

Dr Nikki Turner, Director of the NZ Immunisation Advisory Centre says, “It’s expected that with a successful immunisation programme, the incidence of HPV that leads to cervical cancer will decrease. Every year this may save 60 women from dying of cervical cancer.  It is vital we provide accurate information so people can make an informed decision.”

The OneForTheGirls campaign recognises the role technology plays in the way teenage girls communicate today.  The innovative use of Facebook and Bebo applications is allowing the ADHB to talk with the girls in their own space.

As part of their commitment to this programme, the ADHB enlisted the help of AUT University communication students.  The students have spearheaded a promotional campaign targeting young women and led the development of the OneForTheGirls website to ensure it is relevant and appealing to its audience.

Dr Denis Jury, ADHB Chief Planning and Funding Officer says, “This programme provides an opportunity for young women to be protected against the virus that causes most cervical cancers.  It is an investment in protecting future generations.”

OneForTheGirls will celebrate the launch of the HPV programme in style with a morning tea held for local high school girls and other invited guests.  The Honourable Steve Chadwick, Associate Minister of Health along with Tee Twyford, NZGirl editor and Dr Nikki Turner will address the audience.
