Drink to your health

Drink to your health

The bible endorses its health properties and studies have proven it is good for your heart, can reduce the risk of some cancers and can slow the progression of Alzheimer’s.

Red wine is a super drink – but can it protect you from a nuclear attack?

A new study has revealed that compounds in red wine may protect cells from radiation-related damage.

Resveratrol, the natural antioxidant commonly present in red wine, offers protection against radiation exposure, and some reports have touted it as a possible protection against nuclear fall-out.

Alpha Domus’ wine expert, Paul Ham, says this study is an interesting, albeit unusual, development.

“We have become aware of the medical benefits of drinking wine, from reducing incidence of stroke and improving bone density – but protection against nuclear attack –I’m not sure that I would bet on a glass of our Navigator in case World War III breaks out,” he says laughing.

Paul says you can bank on the health benefits of wine.

“The antioxidants in wine can reduce the incidence of stroke and help with bone density.”

Up until the 18th century, people were encouraged to drink wine to combat water-born illnesses, he says. It was safer to drink wine rather than water because water sources were often very poor and contaminated.

“Pathogens can’t live in wine due to the alcohol, so drinking wine was considered a healthy option.”

But it is the antioxidants in wine which elevate it above other alcoholic beverages.

Big, robust red wines, such as Alpha Domus’ Navigator or AD Aviator, would bring the biggest benefits, Paul says. Big reds are healthier as the skin of the grape stays on for longer during the fermentation process, leading to a greater concentration of resveratrol in the wine.

“Medical benefits aside, there is another very good reason to drink wine. One of the more holistic benefits of wine is simply taking the time to have a glass or two. It has to be good for you to relax.”

If that’s the case, any glass of wine falls into the holistic health category, says Paul.

“And of course, a glass of wine gives you that nice, mild euphoric feeling. It is a great option for many reasons – in moderation of course.”
