Slingshot Is Raising The Flag For Autism NZ

Autism New Zealand is pleased to announce it has formed a partnership with Slingshot in a programme that gives back to the community.

Raising the Flag for Autism NZ empowers new and existing Slingshot customers to choose to have a portion of their monthly bill donated to an Autism NZ Branch. Then each month, Slingshot will send a cheque to Autism NZ to help those affected by an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

“We are thrilled to be part of this programme” says Autism NZ’s National Fundraising Manager, Bobbi Oliver. “Not only will customers be joining the most successful 100% Kiwi-owned telecommunications company but at the same time providing ongoing support to Autism NZ”. “At a time when businesses and individuals are experiencing financially difficulties, it is heart-warming that Slingshot understands our needs and is willing to give back to the community in this way”.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disorder that affects a person’s behaviour, communication, socialising skills and sensory issues. It is estimated that 1 in 100 people have an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) – that’s an estimated 40,000 Kiwis! Surveys have shown that parents of children with autism suffer the highest stress levels of any condition including terminal illness. It occurs in all racial, ethnic, and social groups and is four times more likely to strike boys than girls.

While there is no cure for autism there are ways of helping, especially if a child is diagnosed early and receives appropriate intervention early in life. Specialist education and structured support can make a difference, helping those on the spectrum to maximise skills and achieve their full potential in adulthood

Autism NZ is a registered charity that provides information, support, resources and training on autism spectrum disorders to those with these conditions, their family/whanau, caregivers and professionals working with them. Although it receives some government funding for specific contracts, many of the services provided by their 14 branches (mostly run by volunteer committees) and the National Office depends on the generosity of donations.

Mark Callander, General Manager for Slingshot says "Slingshot has always made a commitment to making a difference in New Zealand. Raising the Flag for Autism NZ and supporting this meaningful charity means we can all play a part in making a difference for those who are affected by an autism spectrum disorder”.
