Hundreds sign up to walk and bike to work

More than 250 people have signed up to give walking and biking to work a go. The Toi Te Ora - Public Health Active Transport campaign, which aims to increase the number of people walking and biking to work, starts on Monday 12 January.

The email series is a step-by-step guide with motivational tips for getting into the habit of walking or biking to work.

“We are really pleased with the number of people taking part. Many have signed up to receive both the Walk to Work and Bike to Work email series. We also have an email series to support people who already walk or bike to work, so they can encourage workmates to do the same,” says Regional Manager Graeme Savage.

The email series looks at route planning, choosing the right equipment, organising your gear, bike maintenance and safety and tips for staying motivated.

“I signed up because I have just bought a bike and want to get motivated to ride it to work. I think it’s going to help having a weekly reminder to bike to work. I’m looking forward to figuring out the best route to take and how to look after my bike,” says Radioworks Client Services Manager Jaimie Thompson, who is signed up to Bike 2 Work.

The main reasons participants signed are to improve their health and fitness followed by saving money and helping the environment.

“When asked to describe their fitness level, a quarter of participants said ‘low’ and just over half described themselves as ‘average’,” says Graeme Savage. “There is also a good geographical spread with people from Eastern and Western Bay of Plenty, Rotorua and Taupo.”

If you are interested in signing up for the Active Transport campaign, go to www.activetransport.co.nz before Friday 16 January.
