Donate your old glasses, sunglasses & hearing aids
24 March 2009 Donate your old glasses, sunglasses & hearing aids!
Intrepid Travel is working with Vision Vietnam and the Children’s Surgical Centre in Cambodia to improve the quality of life for some of the poorest people in the world, by collecting old spectacles, prescription or sunglasses, and hearing aids. They will be shipped to Cambodia and Vietnam, reconfigured and fitted for the disadvantaged by professional ophthalmologists and audiologists.
Intrepid Travel General Manager Alison Mead says "We have a constant stream of donations coming though the door, but know there are plenty more out there. So please if you have an old pair of prescription glasses or sunglasses lying around you no longer have any use for, bring them in and we will get them sent on to the charities involved"
An estimated 100,000 Cambodians are fully or partially blind. The majority, around 75,000 cases, are caused by cataracts, pterygiums, glaucoma and land-mine injuries and are full or partly curable. The Children’s Surgical Centre is a free rehabilitation hospital based in Phnom Penh. Their ophthalmology unit provides surgery and treatment to Cambodian children, most of whom will never otherwise be able to afford treatment or prescription glasses.
Vision Vietnam is committed to help the needy people at risk, to encourage them to build a strong foundation for economic self sufficiency, and to contribute towards a healthier society. They are also committed to improving the quality of vision for disadvantaged people in Vietnam.
