Message From Canterbury Clinical Leaders

Media Release

DATE: 1.5.09
SUBJECT: Message From Canterbury Clinical Leaders

Canterbury’s senior clinical leaders are asking their colleagues to avoid prescribing Tamiflu to people who are well and focus on prescribing the medicine to the few people who are significantly unwell from influenza.

The message is being sent to doctors, pharmacists and nurses this afternoon.

Canterbury District Health Board’s Chief Medical Officer Nigel Millar said, on behalf of the group, that they viewed the supply of Tamiflu as a valuable and limited health resource.

“We want to make sure that in Canterbury Tamiflu is used wisely and there will be good reserves for people who may need it in coming months.” As usual, anyone intending to travel overseas should seek advice from their General Practice about medications they should take with them.
