Entries open for Wearble Arts Competition

ENTRIES ARE OPEN FOR THE ANNUAL WINTEC MATARIKI WEARABLE ARTS COMPETITION

Planning for Wintec’s Matariki celebrations are well underway.
Now in its sixth year, the Wintec Matariki Wearable Arts competition aims to encourage the best of wearable art creations in the three categories of Matariki Magic, Radical Recycle, and Natural Fibres from people of all ages I throughout the community.

Competition Terms and Conditions, and Entry Forms are available now for this year’s event which will be s tagged at Hamilton’s Clarence Street Theatre on Saturday June 20.
For the first time this year, contestants have the opportunity to have their chosen Matariki look enhanced with complimentary hair and makeup assistance by Wintec of Hair and Beauty students.
The competition is open to the public, as well as to Wintec students and staff.
Judges include Donna Campbell, well regarded weaver and multi-media artist, known for her innovative and Leafa Wilson, contemporary work in flax and acclaimed painter and Installation artist , curator and Waikato Museum concept leader, whose practice embraces multimedia, installation and curatorial projects.

He Hokinga Mahara
Date & time: Thursday 18th June, 4.30pm – 6.30pm
Venue: The Bill Gallagher Events Centre, the Hub, Wintec City Campus, Hamilton
Admission: Free and open to the public
Overview: This annual Memorial Service is always the first Matariki event to be celebrated by Wintec. It provides an opportunity for those who have lost a friend or whānau member in the past year to come together and take time to collectively remember their loved ones. This is a non-denominational gathering where people of all beliefs are welcome to farewell the closing year. The evening concludes with a simple meal.

He Karanga Tau Hou
Date & time: Friday 19th June, 6.00am – 8.00am
Venue: The Bill Gallagher Events Centre, the Hub, Wintec City Campus, Hamilton
Admission: Ceremony is free : breakfast by invitation only due to the limited seats available
Overview: Calling in the New Year is the theme of this annual Wintec Matariki event. The early morning start affords the attendees the opportunity to witness for themselves the brief spectacle of the Matariki cluster rising in the pre-dawn sky, signalling the commencement of the New Year in this land. Surrounded in ceremonial chants to keep the spirits warm, the morning’s formalities are followed by a hearty breakfast to sustain those who braved the rigours of a Hamilton winter morning.

Wintec Matariki Wearable Arts

Venue: Clarence Street Theatre, Hamilton
Admission: One non-perishable food item at door; show and competition open to the public.
Overview: This gala Wintec Matariki event presents the best of wearable art creations in the three categories of Matariki Magic, Radical Recycle, and Natural Fibres. Now in its sixth year this event has grown consistently as witnessed by the growing number of entries, and audience numbers as well.

Toitoi Manawa (To inspire, incite and encourage)
Date & time: Thursday 2nd July (Opening night – drinks and nibbles provided)
Friday 3rd July – Monday 3rd August, 10am – 4.30pm everyday
Venue: ArtsPost (Chartwell Gallery), 120 Victoria Street, Hamilton
Admission: Free
Overview: Toitoi Manawa is a collaborative exhibition of contemporary works from past and present Māori and Pacific Island Wintec Media Arts students. The exhibition is a mixture of painting, photography, sculpture and moving image and hopes to inspire, incite and encourage the audience through the different concepts and ideas the works explore.
