CTA Board an opportunity to correct funding inequity
WELLINGTON – 6 August 2009
“The establishment of the new Clinical Training Agency Board brings an opportunity for the removal of current inequities between the length of time general practice registrars are funded compared to hospital-based registrars,” says Dr Jonathan Fox, President of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners.
“Reducing fragmentation in medical workforce training is also a worthy goal for the new Board.”
Dr Fox was responding to the four health workforce reports released this afternoon by Health Minister Tony Ryall. “Collectively the reports represent a comprehensive and compelling analysis of current issues and solutions for the future.”
GP registrars are required to self-fund a significant proportion of their training, unlike their colleagues in other branches of medicine. This situation is a barrier for many to entering GP training.
