New Zealand College of Midwives celebrates 20 Yrs

4 September 2009
Media Release

New Zealand College of Midwives celebrates 20 Years.

Some 20 years ago a cocktail party was held in a small room in Christchurch to celebrate the establishment of the New Zealand College of Midwives. Twenty years on and the College are again celebrating. This time in Wellington.

We are inviting mothers, midwives, doctors, nurses, health managers and funders, journalists, politicians and health authorities to celebrate with us and hear of the role midwives have played in the maternity services over those 20 years.

“We are celebrating all the women and babies births that we have collectively attended; all the families we have shared exciting, joyous and sometimes sad times with.” says Rose Barker, President of the New Zealand College of Midwives.

“Midwives also want to celebrate their professional achievements over the last twenty years. Our midwifery partnership model of care, our education programs and our practice achievements. We are celebrating our founders and the women who have lobbied to achieve the best of childbirth experiences for women and their newborns over the past 20 years. We are celebrating the improved outcomes for mothers and their babies and supporting mothers and fathers as they enter into parenthood”.

The gains of the last 20 years are thanks to a number of midwives and women, governments, doctors and health agencies working together to ensure a safe, accessible maternity service available to all.

The New Zealand College of Midwives looks forward to future generations of women and babies reaping the benefits of a sound maternity service.
