Burwood Birthing Unit to be upgraded
Women giving birth at Burwood Hospital from February 2010 will reap the benefits of renovations which are due to commence in January next year. The Burwood Birthing Unit will be closed from 10-24 January 2010 to enable bathroom upgrades to be completed.
“Our shower and toilet areas were last redecorated in 1993 and we are excited about being able to once again improve them for our new mothers,” Pam Trustcott, Charge Midwife at Burwood Hospital said. “It does mean that the unit will closed for two weeks while this happens, but by doing this the work can be completed without interruptions to either women or contractors.” The four existing shower floors and wet area floor coverings will be replaced with a non-slip vinyl. Vinyl walls will also be replaced and all joints will be heat sealed, making the showers easy clean, safe-non-slip and 100% watertight. It is estimated the refurbishment will cost around $17,000.
All Lead Maternity Carers (LMCs) have been informed about the temporary closure and pregnant women who may have been thinking of giving birth at Burwood between 10 and 24 January will need to discuss alternatives with their LMC. Other possible birthing options include Rangiora, St George’s, Lincoln and Christchurch Women’s Hospitals.
At this stage, the Burwood Birthing Unit is planned to be re-opened at 8am on Monday 25 January 2010.
