Three Southland Hospital Clinicians Receive Dean's Commendation Teaching Awards

Three Southland Hospital clinicians received recognition for teaching this week, having each been awarded the Dunedin School Of Medicine’s Dean’s Commendation to Invercargill Teaching staff.

Consultant General Surgeon Mr Julian Speight, Head of Urology and Divisional Director of Surgical Services Mr David Tulloch and Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Kimb+all Chen were announced as recipients of the award by Dunedin School of Medicine Dean Dr John Adams at the Dean’s Teaching Awards Ceremony at Dunedin Hospital on Wednesday, 7 October.

Each year 4th, 5th and 6th year medical students are invited to nominate those clinical teachers they have found to be inspirational during their clinical training placements.

Each year normally one Invercargill clinician is awarded the commendation, however this year Mr Speight, Mr Tulloch and Dr Chen all received top ranking from students.

Southland DHB Chief Medical Officer Dr Pim Allen said “I am thrilled that the university’s students have recommended David, Kimball and Julian in this way.

“Doctors value this kind of acknowledgement very highly. Teachers who inspire influence health care standards and quality for many years into the future as their students follow their example. There are few higher rewards. “
