Artageous fortune for Wanganui

Whanganui UCOL art, design and fashion students get to strut their stuff in no fewer than twelve exhibitions during UCOL’s annual celebration of creativity, Artrageous.

The month long festival showcases the works of graduate students, with exhibitions of fine arts, glass, computer graphic design and fashion.
Mid-study art and design students will also present their works at venues throughout Wanganui.

Private Collection – Open to View Exhibition: From 8 November
The diverse works of thirteen Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) candidates will feature in their exhibition Private Collection – Open to View at the Federal Hotel Gallery from 8 November.

The exhibition is the culmination of four years of study and countless hours in the studio for the students, who have shown talent and perseverance in their chosen media, including printmaking, sculpture, painting and glass.
Dancing with Light Exhibition: From Saturday 7 November
The graduates of the Diploma in Glass Design and Production programme will showcase their talents at the Edith Gallery with their exhibition Dancing with Light.
The Dancing with Light launch will be combined with the BFA exhibition opening at the Whanganui UCOL campus Atrium on Saturday 7 November.

Historically the opening event is very well attended. This year, sculptor Michel Tuffery will address an expected audience of more than 500 people.
Wallpaper Exhibition: From 30 October

An exhibition by Year One Fine Arts students, titled Wallpaper will open on 30 October at the Matapihi ki te Ao campus. Quay School of the Arts Acting Programme Leader Lorraine Webb says “the annual Wallpaper exhibition is always very popular, giving the public a chance to see brand new talent unfold.”

A slow boat to the land of milk and honey: From Tuesday 17 November
Whanganui School of Design students will express their computer graphic skills in their graduate exhibition A slow boat to the land of milk and honey at the Edith Gallery from Tuesday 17 November.

Frillseekeers Exhibition: From Friday 13 November
The Whanganui UCOL School of Fashion students will have their time to shine at their end of year show on Friday 13 November.

The entire School of Fashion, including Years 1, 2 and 3 and Certificate students will present Frillseekers at the Wanganui Memorial Hall. As a celebration of colour, texture, shape and movement, Frillseekers will showcase the talents of graduating third years, each of whom will be presenting a collection of at least six outfits.

“Through our course of studies, the graduating students have developed a diverse range of skills, critical knowledge and entrepreneurism to participate in the contemporary fashion industry,” says Head of Whanganui UCOL School of Fashion Cassandra Knight.

The popular event is expected to attract up to 600 people.

On the night, pattern making guru and avid supporter of the School of Design John Kite, will present a prize to the best pattern drafting student.

Artrageous has been made possible by the efforts and fundraising activities of the students, including art sales and auctions and the generous support of local sponsors and Whanganui UCOL.
