Death of Professor Sir Don Bevan
The Diabetes Nurses Specialty Section of the New Zealand Nurses’ Organisation expresses great sadness on hearing of Professor Sir Don Bevan’s tragic death. Chair Mary Meendering paid tribute to him, saying “Professor Sir Don Bevan was a man who had a great passion for diabetes and worked tirelessly for many years with Diabetes New Zealand”.
Professor Sir Don Bevan set up the diabetes education centre in Christchurch in 1975 and he was influential in establishing the first specialty diabetes nurse role. “He has constantly supported the role of diabetes nurse specialists in this country and his commitment, drive and energy to diabetes in New Zealand will be sorely missed” said Meendering.
“We will mourn the
loss of a great leader in diabetes management and research,
an inspirational interdisciplinary colleague, an advocate
for patients and healthy life styles and a person whose
legacy will live on. We join with colleagues nationally in
wishing his wife and family our deepest sympathy at this
time”.
