Incorrect Information About CDHB Services in Press

Incorrect Information About CDHB Services in Today’s The Press

Incorrect information published by The Press today is very concerning, according to Dr Alfred Dell’Ario, Clinical Director of the South Island Eating Disorders Service.

A perspective piece from Dr Robert Crawford in today’s paper erroneously states that the Eating Disorders Unit at The Princess Margaret Hospital is to close.

“This is so far from the truth, it is ridiculous. This Unit is the only one in the South Island and there is absolutely no intention of closing it,” Dr Dell’Ario said.

“The only change currently being made to the service, is to provide a higher level of medical care for the small number of eating disorders patients who are medically compromised. They will be cared for at Christchurch Hospital, until they are no longer medically compromised, under the shared care of staff there and from the Eating Disorders Service.”

“The Eating Disorders Unit, which is run by the Eating Disorders Service, will as usual be there to treat people who are not medically compromised but need the support of mental health services to treat their eating disorder.”

In the perspective piece, Dr Crawford also stated that CDHB had closed the 198 Youth Health Centre. This is not true. In fact, CDHB worked with the Centre to try and maintain it.*
