UV radiation under the microscope

The entire spectrum of Ultra Violet (UV) radiation, its affect on plants, people and the planet will be under the microscope at the 2010 UV Workshop being held in Queenstown 7 – 9 April. Leading researchers with an interest in UV radiation, and its health impacts, are attending a workshop, convened by NIWA. The Cancer Society is a sponsor and the Society’s Skin Cancer Advisor, Dr Judith Galtry is a co-convenor.

“This workshop is bringing together what, at face value, seems an unusual and unlikely mix of UVR scientists, technical experts, epidemiologists, dermatologists, public health specialists and health promoters, including SunSmart policy makers,” said Dr Galtry.

“It is a rare opportunity to get together to discuss topics that are highly scientific and technical, such as the measurement and effects of UV radiation and the ozone hole; to those concerning the potential impact of UV radiation exposure for various illnesses - to those concerning making healthy public policy. The importance of interdisciplinary collaboration is often discussed but not always easily achieved,” she added.

“New Zealand and Australia have much in common with similar environmental and climate challenges, as well as world-topping melanoma incidence rates. With current high levels of Trans-Tasman migration, which are predicted to increase significantly by the end of the decade, there is little sense for New Zealand and Australia to grapple individually with these complex issues, but rather to try and combine problem solving and information sharing, wherever possible.”
