Comments On Royal College Of GP Statements
Dr Harry Peat President of the Royal College of GP’s is on record as saying that we (GP’s) need to rethink the way we deliver services and we need to think about who does what and whether we are making the best use of the people we have.
Dr Peat continues that Doctors need to be relieved of some of their bureaucratic work so they can use more of their medical skills.
Grey Power agrees entirely with Dr Peat but has some concerns on how this ideal can be achieved within the present climate and debate on Health Reviews.
All reviews have neglected to involve or listen to the issues raised by consumers and have set goals that in many instances although directed at saving funding and telling the consumer what care is available for them, really is not addressing the basic needs and fundamental requirements of the Community.
Grey Power has already signified that there are greater efficiencies to be made than the present reductions under the present Home Care Policies.
Already it has been shown that when Communities become involved especially under the Rural Health Immersion Scheme, that attracting GP’s to Rural areas can sometimes become an attractive proposition.
We will always have to accept that many people after qualifying, decide to seek overseas experiences, and it would seem that after time and savings have been made many come back to NZ to enjoy the family life available in NZ.
It is very noticeable that many overseas qualified people are very contented living in this country and happy to perform their duties under NZ conditions.
Some of the issues that need attention under the present reviews that need comment on from GP’s are >>>>
(a) The expected full charging on the request of a second diagnoses.
{ an increasing number of people are having to make arrangements with Banks etc to pay Medical Costs}
(b) After Hour appointment expected Fees.
(c) Locums now a Profession --- high Fees but no responsibility.
(d) More emphasis needed on the duties of Nurse Practitioners
(e) The ever increasing escalation of Fees
(f) The need for more emphasis on language.
(g) The need to address qualifications to a changing world
(h) The need for experience to be balanced with Policies.
(i) More transparency in the Health perspective.
(j) Better Communication between disciplines.
We have a country with so much to offer surely it is time to promote that aspect and enlarge on the attractions that make living here a refreshing, desirable and sought after alternative.
