Government sells off workers’ rights to big business
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) is extremely concerned that the Government has sold off the rights of New Zealand workers to big business. Legislation passed in parliament today makes all those who work for the film industry contractors rather than employees.
“This rushed change to employment law is unnecessary and wrong. Changing the law under urgency and with only a day’s notice is an abuse of our democratic system,” says NZNO president Nano Tunnicliff.
“It is misleading to suggest that there was a pressing need to change the legislation in this way. The law relating to employees/independent contractors has been reasonably well settled since 2005.”
“It is chilling to see New Zealand employment law being amended at the insistence of a US-based multi-national, and it is alarming that the government has shown that it has no qualms about rushing through heavy-handed legislative intervention to ensure that 'troublesome workers' don't get ideas above their station.” Tunnicliff says.
