NZMA supports new health leadership centre
Tuesday 22 February 2011
The establishment of a New Zealand Centre of Excellence in Health Care Leadership, announced by Health Workforce New Zealand (HWNZ), is strongly supported by the New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) which believes it will help to improve the delivery of quality health services in New Zealand.
“We need to provide opportunities to develop leadership in the health sector,” says NZMA Chair Dr Peter Foley. “In a time of financial constraint, the health sector is under pressure to be more cost effective and innovative in responding to the health care needs of our communities. To meet this challenge we need individuals with well developed leadership skills.”
Dr Foley says that the establishment of this centre in New Zealand is a positive development that the NZMA has supported since it was first mooted. “We commend HWNZ for now confirming its central place in enhancing our clinical leadership needs in the New Zealand health sector.”
The Centre of Excellence in Health Care Leadership will be hosted by the University of Auckland and will coordinate existing, and new, programmes.
