Earthquake message from NHB Chair
Earthquake message from NHB Chair
My thoughts and those of the entire National Health Board are with all those affected by last week's earthquake in Canterbury.
The earthquake has had a profound effect on the health community throughout New Zealand and I would like to acknowledge the efforts of the entire health sector and the way in which it has responded.
During the emergency response CDHB staff worked tirelessly in the most trying conditions, supported by health organisations from throughout the region including primary care and private hospitals.
These organisations continue to work around the clock and will be stretched for quite some time. Despite coping with personal loss, health staff are continuing to work in support of others.
The whole of sector response has seen DHBs throughout New Zealand involved in the care of transferred patients and in releasing staff to support the operation on the ground. Additionally, rest homes throughout the country are involved in the care of re-located elderly people.
Staff at the NHB Business Unit and the wider Ministry of Health are involved in supporting the response both in Christchurch and through the National Health Co-ordination centre in Wellington.
I would like to acknowledge the contribution of Governments around the world including Australia who, as well as many other initiatives, have provided a medical team and facilities
The National Health Board recognises that a great deal of hard work lies ahead. We will work to support the CDHB and the entire New Zealand Health System to respond to this disaster and ensure a speedy recovery.
