2,300km adventure to begin Saturday
This Saturday, five cyclists will depart Bluff on the biggest ride of their lives, a journey that will last 27-days and take them to Cape Reinga.
Ride Out of the Blue is the brainchild of half Kiwi, half Aussie, mother and lawyer, Alison Blyth who, motivated by the death of her family members and her own experience of depression, decided it was time she did something to raise awareness of depression and funds for the Mental Health Foundation.
With the planning and training now done Alison and her fellow cyclists are set to start peddling their way through 2,300km.
“Men's mental health is a huge issue that has been brought out into the light over the last few years. It's something I deal with regularly at work and I want to do my bit to keep the good work going” says participant Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Glossop. “Campaigns like this will bring knowledge and support that will save lives and improve the lives of individuals and their family.”
As the riders and support crews head north they will be looking for opportunities to participate in community events that not only encourage discussion around mental health but also raise money for the Mental Health Foundation.
With close to $9,000 already raised, Ride Out of the Blue will be hosting a cocktails party and raffle with some exclusive prizes on their arrival in Auckland.
“Alison and her team have gone above and beyond for this event” Judi Clements, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation says. “We are excited to watch their progress up the country and look forward to celebrating their success at the end”
Ride Out of the Blue is endorsed by Counties Manukau New Zealand Police and Police Officer David Glossop is one of the riders confirmed for the event. The event also has the support of RideStrong, New Zealand's cycling community dedicated to a safer and more enjoyable riding experience for all.
The event is open to anyone for either the entire challenge or individual legs.
