College of GPs Deputy President Resigns

COLLEGE OF GPS DEPUTY PRESIDENT RESIGNS

The Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners Deputy President Dr Tony Townsend has resigned.

Dr Townsend was re-elected for a second term in the role last month.

College President Dr Harry Pert says Dr Townsend has resigned for unforeseen personal reasons.

“Tony had intended to be in the role until the new College Rules are adopted that disestablish the position of an elected Deputy President.

“However, he has had some unforeseen personal issues arise following the Christchurch earthquake, and that combined with unexpected workload pressures at his practice in Whangamata, have made him rethink the timing.

“He believes he would not be able to dedicate the time needed to fulfil the obligations of the role and therefore, has tendered his resignation.”

Dr Townsend’s resignation will take effect from 10 April 2011 and Dr Pert says the College Rules dictate that he as President appoint an Acting Deputy President, to be approved by the College Council.

He says he will look to do this as soon as possible.

“In the meantime, I would like to thank Tony on behalf of the Board and the membership for his service to the College over many years. He has done an excellent job and we are very sorry to be losing him.”
