New Cardiology Service At Waitemata DHB

A new $8.5 million, state of the art cardiology service being developed at Waitemata DHB will see improved, leading edge care for cardiac patients in the district.

The cardiology service, to be housed on the first floor of the DHB’s Lakeview development, will see the addition of two cardiac catheter laboratories, a coronary care unit and cardiology ward to the development – in addition to the new emergency department and 50-bed Assessment and Diagnostic Unit opened by Minister of Health Tony Ryall on 1st March 2011.

“The addition of the cardiology service to Lakeview will help provide leading edge service delivery by combining cardiac care with intensive care and high dependency services under one roof,” says Dr Tony Scott, clinical leader cardiology.

Once operational in January 2012, the service will see the doubling of Waitemata DHB’s cardiac catheter laboratory capacity, enabling improved, faster diagnosis. It will also result in an upgrade to existing cardiac coronary care services in the district, and provides the opportunity to add up to 25 additional inpatient beds to North Shore Hospital.

“By combining these services under one roof, we can expect to see reduced lengths of hospital stays and also reduced emergency department waits for patients,” says Dr Scott. Waitemata DHB deputy chief executive Dr Dale Bramley says the decision ensures the best use of the first floor of Lakeview for the long term, ensuring operational efficiencies and ultimately, the delivery of better patient outcomes.
