Twelve year old Jackson Garwood from Newlands has asthma and helped out at Waitangi Park during Asthma Awareness Week at a promotional event.

Jackson Garwood and the Chief Executive of the Asthma Foundation, Angela Francis, had a bit of a chat as a team of balloonists attempted to inflate Puff, the Foundation’s balloon. Unfortunately the weather conditions were not quite right.

Angela and Jackson were there to promote the message: Let’s keep our kids out of hospital!

“I consider it a privilege and really interesting to meet kids with asthma and hear their stories, “Angela says.

Jackson not only looked firmly in control of the balloon’s burners, but manages his asthma well.

“Jackson is a great example of how children and youngsters with asthma can control their asthma and lead full lives.”

Asthma hospitalisations among children are on the rise in New Zealand, an experience that is often acutely stressful for children and their families.

Jackson’s mother, Tara, says Jackson is very active.
