Start Of Waitakere Hospital’s 24-7 Emergency Service For Adults

The much anticipated 24-7 emergency care service for adults in west Auckland commences at Waitakere Hospital from June 7.

It marks the completion of Waitemata DHB’s commitment to delivering 24 hour emergency care at Waitakere Hospital for all residents in west Auckland, following the introduction of 24-7 emergency care services for children last year.

Waitemata DHB chairman Dr Lester Levy says the board has worked hard to ensure that round-the-clock emergency care for all west Aucklanders is made available at Waitakere Hospital.

“We recognise that people in west Auckland have waited long and patiently for this, and through the hard work, dedication and perseverance of our staff, the service is now a reality.

“While we’ve added significantly to services at Waitakere Hospital over the past year – including the introduction of 24-7 paediatric care and a marked increase in elective surgeries such as hip replacements – we as a board remain committed to continually improving Waitakere Hospital.”

Currently Waitakere Hospital’s emergency department is closed for adult patients from 10pm to 8am, but from June 7, it will be open 24 hours a day for adults who have emergency conditions.

This change means the Waitakere Hospital emergency department will provide treatment and care to all adults and children with serious or urgent health problems 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Waitemata DHB is, however, asking people to use the emergency department only if they have an emergency or serious health problem.

Patients with non-urgent and non-emergency conditions are asked to see their GPs or closest Accident and Medical Centre. Doing this will enable patients with emergency or serious conditions to receive hospital treatment quickly.
