Celebrating enrolled nurses
The New Zealand Nurses Organisation (NZNO) is celebrating national Enrolled Nurses Day tomorrow (30 June).
Chair of NZNO’s Enrolled Nurse section, Robyn Hewlett, explains why there is a lot to celebrate “Last year the Health Minister announced a new broader scope of practice for enrolled nurses. That’s good news for enrolled nurses and for the health sector as a whole. Over the last 12 months enrolled nurses have been training and up-skilling for their new roles.”
“We commend the Nursing Council for their work developing the broader scope of practice for enrolled nurses and the education to support it. Nine polytechnics are offering the 18 month diploma in enrolled nursing this year,” Hewlett says.
“The first enrolled nurses to complete the courses will graduate later this year, and the section is looking forward to welcoming these new enrolled nurse colleagues.”
“Enrolled nurses make a huge contribution to patient care, from working in hospital wards to supporting patients in the community. The right mix of health care assistants, enrolled nurses and registered nurses means every patient can receive the right care at the right time in the right place. The section is advocating for health workforce planning to incorporate enrolled nursing,” Hewlett says.
