Age Concern New Zealand says you've got the power!

Receiving the monthly power bill can be a major source of stress for older people living on fixed incomes. Changing companies may help reduce costs without compromising on warmth.

Age Concern National President Liz Baxendine encourages anybody concerned about their power bill to take advantage of a competitive market and shop around.

"A report by the Electricity Authority's Consumer Switching Fund noted consumers not shopping around could lead to less competitive offers."

The Electricity Authority is currently running a power-switching campaign, What's My Number. The website allows people to see for themselves the savings which could be made by switching energy retailers.

Baxendine advises seniors with internet access to log on to http://www.whatsmynumber.org.nz/ or to ask a friend or family member to help them through the process. Alternatively, calling around companies may also result in a more competitive offer.

"Switchme.co.nz also offers an energy comparison service which is free and can ensure you're paying the lowest amount possible for electricity and gas. Switching companies can be as easy as calling an energy helpline on 0800 179 482 and letting them walk you through the process."

Having found the most suitable power company, Age Concern also urges older people to balance energy conservation with the need to stay warm and healthy.

Hot tips for staying warm and saving money on power this winter:

• Checking seals on windows and doors
• Drawing blinds early
• Heating one central area well
• Turn your hot water gauge down to 60 degrees
• Use low wattage, energy saving light bulbs
