One Million Safer Kids … begins with ONE

One Million Safer Kids … begins with ONE

National Story
1 November 2011

Bullying at school, family violence, sexual abuse… all phrases too commonly heard in New Zealand. Kidpower is an international organisation that began in the USA in 1989 teaching skills to prevent bullying, abuse and other violence. In 1993 NZ got its own Kidpower which has grown from small beginnings in Nelson Bays to a being a national organisation with an office in Auckland to compliment the one in the South Island.

Recently Kidpower International celebrated reaching more than 2 million people with people safety programmes. Kidpower’s One Million Safer Kids Campaign hopes to encourage people to take up the challenge of making sure all our kids get taught to stick up for themselves and for others, to deal with bullies and to get help, and persist in getting help when things go wrong.

15 countries around the world from Nepal to Argentina, from Canada and Germany will all be working towards reaching one million children and teaching them lifelong skills to solve conflict in a positive way.

Kidpower in NZ has set a target of reaching 1000 kids in 2012 – you can help us by going to www.kidpower.org.nz and looking at our safety tips. Enter our colouring competition -there’s lots of prizes up for grabs and free places on some of our programmes to be won.

Kidpower offers programmes for people of all ages and abilities throughout New Zealand so look out for a course near you soon – 2012 workshops will be up on the web soon or contact us for a tailor made session.

Organisation Information

Kidpower International is based in the USA, there are centres in several countries around the world including New Zealand which use Kidpower’s basic skill base and adapt it for their own countries.

Kidpower Teenpower Fullpower Trust is a charity with offices in Nelson and Auckland. We work nationwide from these bases delivering programmes that teach skills to keep people safe with people they know and people they don’t know. We have programmes for those aged 4-7, 8-12, teens and adults. We also have a programme called Healthy Relationships to help those with cognitive disabilities – a group highly over represented in abuse statistics.

We are funded through the generosity of several grant making trusts and sponsors. We also charge a small fee where appropriate for our services.
