Forget the bling-bling, do the whanau thing
With the festive season upon us the Mental Health Foundation is proud to be supporting the ‘Forget the bling-bling, do the whanau thing’ campaign.
Developed in Whangarei and led by Manaia Health PHO and 155 Community House the idea behind the campaign is to encourage communities to stay away from high debt and commercially driven ideas about celebrating Christmas and instead look at ideas for spending time with our families, whanau, and friends.
“Debt can be one of life’s major stressors and Christmas is traditionally a time of year where people can easily get themselves into financial difficulties” says Judi Clements, Chief Executive of the Mental Health Foundation. “By encouraging people to find more practical ways of giving Forget the Bling is promoting a fantastic way to look after our wellbeing”
Gifts do not have to cost a lot of money to show someone they are appreciated and the ‘Forget the bling-bling, do the whanau thing’ campaign suggests home made cards, poems, personalised gift vouchers or home made food gift wrapped with a recipe attached.
“Christmas is about creating lasting memories with our loved ones” says Ms Clements, “It should be seen as a time to relax and enjoy what we have”
