South Island cancer patients testing and care improves

Cancer patients in the South Island now have better access to advanced testing and care, thanks to a community effort to improve services.

The Canterbury District Health Board pledged $400,000 towards a new Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) machine earlier this year and community organisations have raised additional money for training and extra equipment to enhance its effectiveness.

Dr Richard Gearry, Christchurch Hospital Gastroenterologist and Bowel and Liver Trust trustee, says the EUS will greatly improve the care of patients.

“Until now, South Islanders diagnosed with tumours of the oesophagus, stomach, pancreas and lung have had to go to Auckland for this type of test. The last thing they want to do is travel away from home,” Dr Gearry says.

“The new machine can provide the same information, which previously required painful surgery. EUS allows doctors to determine how far a cancer has spread to ensure the patient gets the right treatment.”

EUS combines a standard endoscope, which passes through the mouth and into the stomach, with an ultrasound probe, giving gastroenterologists the very best diagnostic information.

Jennifer Ferner, a gastroenterology patient and nurse at Christchurch Hospital Outpatients Department, says the EUS will make a significant difference to her own and her patients’ lives.

“As a patient myself, I know what it’s like to face the possibility of having to travel long distances to access treatment; it’s especially very hard being away from your family,” Jennifer says.

“It also seems crazy travelling that far for what is a relatively simple and quick procedure – so finally having a EUS here in Christchurch is just great.”

The Bowel and Liver Trust has partnered with the Rotary Club of Hornby, the CDHB, the Community Trust, the Eureka Trust and the Mauger Charitable Foundation to raise funds for the purchase of EUS for the Christchurch Hospital Gastrointestinal Investigative Unit.
