Free general practice visits extended for
children under six
From 1 July the West Coast is implementing the Government policy of providing free after hours primary health care to children aged under six years.
Under the Very Low Cost Access (VLCA) scheme
Coasters who are enrolled with a General Practice already
enjoy reduced costs for GP visits during normal clinic
hours.
• $0.00 for children under six years of age;
• $11.50 for children 6 - 17 years;
• $17.00 for
adults aged 18 years and over.
From 1 July 2012 all children under six who need medical care will get it for free, regardless of the time of day.
“When kids are unwell, it’s important that they get medical treatment quickly,” said Dr John Garrett, liaison paediatrician, West Coast DHB, “Children under six can be especially susceptible to illnesses and can deteriorate quickly so it’s important that they get the right care, at the right time.”
If you’re not sure if your child needs to see a health professional you should call your General Practice on its usual phone number, if you are a visitor ph 03 769 7449 for advice from an experienced registered nurse or phone Healthline 0800 611 116. These services are available 24 hours a day. Please do not phone the hospital emergency department asking for assistance.
