Global leaders in patient-centred care to speak

Global leaders in patient-centred care to speak at general practice conference

Global leaders in the field of patient-centred care will be keynote speakers at this year’s Conference for General Practice, says President of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP), Dr Harry Pert.

‘The RNZCGP and General Practice New Zealand (GPNZ) are extremely fortunate to have secured Maureen Bisognano and Professor Don Berwick while they are here for the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Asia Pacific Forum. Maureen Bisognano is President and CEO of the IHI and will speak about meaningful quality measurement with a focus on patient experience.

‘Professor Don Berwick is the former President and CEO of the IHI which he co-founded and led for over 20 years. He will talk to delegates about clinician leadership in pursuit of the Triple Aim’, says Dr Pert.

The ‘Triple Aim’ is an approach focusing on three critical objectives that potentially lead to better models for providing health care.

The conference, being held 21 to 23 September at the Langham Hotel in Auckland, takes the theme ‘Through Patients’ Eyes’. It will challenge delegates to view – through the eyes of patients – how the best health outcomes are organised and delivered.

The key features include four high-level international keynote speakers, three respected New Zealand keynote speakers, inspirational plenary sessions, ACLS and clinical skills workshops, two panel forums with keynote speakers, 41 breakout sessions, a RNZCGP Fellowship Ceremony and a tailored Registrar Day.

‘This year, we are pleased to be holding our conference alongside the IHI and Ko Awatea’s Asia Pacific Forum,’ says Dr Pert. ‘This is a great opportunity to complement the knowledge and experience gained at the 2012 Conference for General Practice with new ideas on how to enhance value, safety and integration in the changing landscape of health care.’

Dr Pert says the international speakers will be joined by three highly respected New Zealand keynote speakers. ‘Professor Ron Paterson is Professor of Health Law and Policy at the University of Auckland. He will speak to delegates about what patients want from their doctors and nurses.

‘Dr Kevin Woods, Director-General of Health, will open the first plenary session with a talk on implementing the Triple Aim in New Zealand. He will be followed by Professor Les Toop, Head of Department of Public Health and General Practice at the University of Otago, who will speak about preparing for the challenge of working within multiple conflicting paradigms for the common good.

‘The RNZCGP and GPNZ look forward to welcoming all of the speakers, delegates, sponsors and exhibitors to the 2012 Conference for General Practice,’ says Dr Pert.
