Material Art Show to Support Sick Kids

 
In 2011 when Ciara Griffin celebrated her 4th birthday in Wellington Children’s Hospital, she became one of the many patients to receive a quilt made by Wellington Hospitals and Health Foundation volunteers. 
 
“It is so beautiful” says her mother Wendy. “The quilt has been everywhere, and I mean everywhere!”
 
Each year more than 9,000 quilts and knitted items are produced by volunteers for use in the maternity, neonatal and children’s wards at Wellington and Kenepuru Hospitals.  This year, volunteers and quilting groups have produced additional quilts for sale at The Material Art Show in support of Wellington Children’s Hospital. This is our second Material Art Show, the first Material Art Show was in November 2011 where around $15,000 was raised for the Children’s hospital.
 
Trish Lee, Manager of the Foundation’s Volunteer Service said “A lot of time goes into producing each quilt. They are beautiful works of art and no two are the same.  They come in a variety of designs and sizes, from a baby’s bassinette to king size and will make fantastic Mothers Day/Christmas presents.”
 
Staff, members and friends of Sue B’s Quilting Service in Island Bay have provided numerous quilts as well as the machine finishing on most of the donated items. “Sue is an amazing generous supporter of the Hospital”, Trish Lee said.
 
Many Quilts have also been donated by members of the Sunshine Quilters (Kapiti Coast), Embroidery Guild (Wellington), Kapiti Quilters, Karori Quilters and various Foundation volunteers.
 
Gala Evening
The Material Art Show, held at Wellington Hospital, opens with a Gala Evening on Wednesday, 8th May from 6pm, where guests will have first preference for purchasing a quilt.   Remaining quilts will be on show and available for purchase from Thursday 9th till Saturday 11th May.
