NZ Press Council Ruling Against North and South Magazine
New Zealand Press Council Ruling Against North and South Magazine
In July 2012 the New Zealand magazine North and South ran a feature on alternative medicine which contained an article on homeopathy titled “ Homeopathy – Trick or Treatment”. The article contained the statements : “homeopathic remedies have failed every randomised, evidence based scientific study seeking to verify their claims of healing powers” and “there is no scientific evidence of homeopathy’s efficacy”.
Clive Stuart, a homeopath from Tauranga complained to the New Zealand Press Council that the article was highly derogatory, inaccurate and misleading. His complaint was upheld by the Press Council.

Mr. Stuart’s complaint to the Press Council was supported by a detailed critical analysis by a clinical epidemiologist of a key scientific article, details of which can be found on the New Zealand Council of Homeopaths website http://www.homeopathy.co.nz/ under the heading “North & South and Homeopathy – Truth or Fiction ?”
In their ruling the Press Council stated that newspapers and magazines “need to take particular care in references to medical research. The references in this case were not sufficiently accurate, balanced or fair to homeopathy and its practitioners. On those grounds the complaint was upheld” .
